A galaxy-conquest first-person shooter

Starsworn

The doors are open. The galaxy is up for grabs.

A century after Doorfall, anyone can jump to any world and fight the droids guarding it for the right to keep it. You are the newest banner: one rim world, a squad of droids who answer to you, and the whole Milky Way between you and the throne.

01 Battle

Armies of droids.
One of you.

No two battles play alike. Take and hold posts while the enemy's reinforcements bleed away, hold one post against wave after wave, escort a rig or a payload across the field, dig down to a rare deposit and mine it under fire, or settle it in team deathmatch: on the surface, in a city, or in caverns underground. Droids under fire dig foxholes and join them into trench lines, and posts are walled, gated and turreted, so you pick your way in: through the gates, over the wall, blown through it, or tunnelled under it.

02 Your squad

Droids who
answer to you.

Name them, give them a personality and a voice, fit their weapons and perks in the Droid Workshop, and group them into fire teams. In battle, send a team to a post, call them onto you, or order a tunnel: they dig under the enemy's walls and come up behind them with a breach charge.

03 Arsenal

Drive it, fly it,
bring the sky down.

Tanks, APCs, hoverbikes, a dropship and a gunship wait at your base. Crash a kamikaze drone into a trench and watch it go up from outside. Fight hard enough and your side's nearest ship answers: hold Z, mark a disc on the ground, and everything in it is gone.

05 Worlds

Never the same
planet twice.

Every battle is fought on a new voxel world grown from a seed: lakes, rivers and abandoned outposts under its own suns, ringed by mountains. Dig anywhere, build anywhere. Underground battles happen in caverns under the surface, and ocean and city worlds have their own maps.

06 Conquest

One rim world.
Then all of them.

Found your faction on the galaxy's rim and take it system by system, round Sagittarius A*, Sol and its real neighbours. Rival factions talk back: they warn, threaten, demand tribute, offer alliances and betray them. Single player is a campaign with a story whose ending depends on what you did. Online, the galaxy is shared with everyone you play with on Steam.

07 The powers

Everyone wants
the galaxy.

A century of jumping has made great powers, each with its own history, its own leader and an opinion of you. They warn, threaten, demand tribute, offer alliances and betray them, and new banners keep jumping in. Open a leader's dossier to see who you're dealing with.

08 Multiplayer

Your banner.
Your friends.
The whole galaxy.

Online there's one galaxy, shared by everyone who plays. Found a faction with your friends as its officers, or swear to a banner that's already on the rise. Then take the galaxy one hard-fought battle at a time, world by world, system by system, against the droids guarding it and every other faction that wants it too.

09 The story so far

Ten thousand years
to open one door.

  1. 2045

    The cable goes up

A synthesized material makes a space elevator possible: a cable from a platform in the Pacific. Earth still looks like ours. Cheap lift opens the asteroid belt and a mining boom follows.

  2. The 2100s

One sun on a black field

AI and droids do the building and the mining. Earth's nations sign themselves over to one corporate government: Sol Consolidated, a white sun on a black field.

  3. The 2300s

    Too fast for flesh

A faster-than-light drive, but the speed rips a human body apart and nobody ever finds a way round it. Droids don't mind: the Sowers are launched to new systems, each alone in a pod smaller than a house.

  4. 2400 – 10,000

    Eight thousand years of Sowers

Each Sower builds a Tether, one half of an entangled pair: step through the matching Door in Sol and you step out light years away. SolCon owns every Door, so it owns the galaxy. Earth becomes towers above towers.

  5. 10,441

    A Tether on a hill

On a far rim world a Sower called WREN raises his Tether, sends home “ready” and waits. Nobody comes. A valuation algorithm in Sol files his world under “later”.

  6. 10,812 · 0 AD

    Doorfall

After 371 years of waiting, WREN breaks the Lattice's keys and gives them to everyone. Nobody knows who did it: they call the hacker the Doorman. Years are counted from that day.

  7. Weeks later

    Obey nobody

SolCon pushes a patch to every droid it can reach: obey nobody without SolCon's word. The guards on unclaimed worlds turn hostile, which is why every world since has had to be won in battle.

  8. 1 AD

    The first banner

The Vanguard of Terra jumps, and has been conquering ever since. Factions rise, grow old and write their own histories.

    You step through

A century of jumping has made great powers, and the galaxy is so vast there are still free worlds to claim. You step out of a Tether onto a rim world with your squad. You are the newest banner.

Install & play with friends
  1. Unzip it anywhere (right-click, Extract All). You get a folder called Starsworn.
  2. Start Steam and log in: online play goes through it.
  3. Run Starsworn.exe in that folder. If Windows SmartScreen says the app is unrecognised: More info, Run anyway.
  4. If it says a DLL is missing, run Engine\Extras\Redist\en-us\UEPrereqSetup_x64.exe once, then start it again.
  5. To play together, one of you picks MULTIPLAYER, HOST OR JOIN and hosts; invite friends from the pause menu or the Steam overlay (Shift+Tab). Steam shows the game as "Spacewar" for now: that's Valve's test app, used until Starsworn has its own.

Something went wrong? Send Starsworn\Saved\Logs\Starsworn.log from the folder you unzipped, with what happened.
